  • anchor   A heavy iron tool with points to dig into the bottom of a harbor, lake, or river to hold a ship or boat so that it cannot float away. Listen: (AN-kur)
  • arrow   A stick with a pointed head on one end and feathers on the other end to help it fly straight. Listen: (AHR-oh)
  • banana   A long, curved tropical fruit with a thick, smooth outer peel and creamy soft flesh and grows in bunches on a tree-like plant with large wide green leaves. Listen: (bah-NAN-ah)
  • beach   The area at the edge of the ocean that changes width as the tide comes in and goes out. Listen: (BEECH)
  • bottle   A container, often made of glass, with a narrow neck and usually used for holding liquids. Listen: (BAH-tul)
  • bridge   A construction or natural feature that goes across a divide such as a stream and allows people and vehicles to cross. Listen: (BRI(D)J)
  • carved   A piece of art made by cutting away parts of a block of stone, metal, or wood to form a shape. Listen: (KARVD)
  • clue   A hint or guide that gives information leading to solving a problem or finding something. Listen: (KLOO)
  • crank   A bent straight piece attached to a wheel or gear and used to turn it around and around. Listen: (KRAYNK)
  • crystal   A solid piece of mineral with its molecules arranged in a pattern that repeats in three dimensions, often having a shiny surface. Listen: (KRIS-tul)
  • deserted   A remote area with no people living there. Listen: (deh-ZERT-ed)
  • explore   To travel and investigate a location, either seeking to find something or just to find out what is there. Listen: (ex-PLOHR)
  • forest   An large area covered thickly in trees and undergrowth that has grown naturally instead of being planted. Listen: (FOR-est)
  • gorilla   The largest of the apes, found in Africa and known for walking by resting its weight on its knuckles. Listen: (go-RILL-ah)
  • island    Land that is completely surrounded by water. Listen: (EYE-lund)
  • jungle   A place where thick, tangled tropical plants make it difficult to walk through. Listen: (JUN-gull)
  • lava   Very hot melted rock that comes out the top or sides of a volcano. Listen: (LAH-vah)
  • machinery   Parts of a machine that work together to carry out its purpose. Listen: (mah-SHEEN-er-ee)
  • match   A strip of wood or paper, coated at the tip with chemicals that begin to burn when dragged across a rough, dry surface. Listen: (MAA(T)CH)
  • monster   A terrifying and dangerous creature, usually of a strange appearance. Listen: (MAHN-stur)
  • orange   The color of the ripe fruit of an orange tree, halfway between yellow and red. Listen: (OH-ranj)
  • palm tree   Something scary, usually dark. Listen: (PAHLM TREE)
  • pirate   A criminal who attacks and robs ships at sea. Listen: (PEYE-rit)
  • scimitar   A sword of Persian origin with a curved blade. Listen: (SIM-i-ter)
  • scratch   To rub a surface such as skin with a sharp object such as nails or claws. Also, a mark left by rubbing a surface in this way. Listen: (SKRAATCH)
  • sea star   Sea animal (also starfish) with a tough, bumpy skin and five or more arms. Listen: (SEE STAWR)
  • shell   The hard outer covering of animals such as snails, clams, and oysters, or the hard outer covering of seeds such as nuts. Listen: (SHEHL)
  • skull   The main bones of the head including the jawbone. Listen: (SKUHL)
  • spyglass    A small easy-to-carry telescope. Listen: (SPEYE-glaas)
  • stalactites   Mineral deposites shaped like icicles that hang from the roof of a cave. Listen: (stah-LAAK-teyets)
  • starfish   Sea animal (also sea star) with a tough, bumpy skin and five or more arms. Listen: (STAWR-fish)
  • statue   A three-dimensional work of art, usually representing a person or animal, created by sculpting, carving, molding, or casting. Listen: (STAA(T)-choo)
  • storm   A windy, disturbed state of the atmosphere, usually describing unpleasant weather. Listen: (STOHRM)
  • stream   A body of moving water kept in place by banks, such as a large creek or a small river. Listen: (STREEM)
  • tiki   A carved magical object in the shape of a person found in cultures of the Pacific Ocean. Listen: (TEE-kee)
  • torch   A stick with a flame at one end, usually used as a light source. Listen: (TOHRCH)
  • toucan   Any of several fruit-eating birds with large colorful bills that live in the South American tropical forest. Listen: (TOO-kan)
  • treasure   A collection of valuable things such as jewels, money, and jewelry. Listen: (TREH-zhyur)
  • tunnel   A covered underground hallway, either a natural passage in a cave or one made by people. Listen: (TUH-null)
